Hike to Peder-Stieralm & Lyfialm
Silent Tracks in Winter Light
The snow crunches softly beneath your boots as you wander deeper into the winter silence of the upper Martell Valley. Above you, the peaks sparkle in the sun; ahead lies the wide, quiet path to Peder-Stieralm – a place where time slows down. Continuing on, you reach Lyfialm, where warmth, the scent of homemade food, and the view of snow-covered giants welcome you like an embrace.
Seasonal period: December – March (depending on snow conditions)
Refreshment options & special features:
A gentle, soul-soothing tour through quiet woods and sunny alpine meadows. The Peder-Stieralm radiates stillness and strength, while Lyfialm charms with its warmth and genuine mountain hospitality.
At Lyfialm, warm up by the tiled stove and treat yourself to a hot chocolate or a serving of Schneemilch – a traditional Vinschgau dessert that tastes like childhood and mountain air.
Suitable for: Active adults and young explorers from around 8 years old
Directions:
Your winter hike begins at the car park near the Enzianhütte (2,050 m). Walk about 50 metres down the valley and follow trail no. 39, which gently climbs through a snow-covered pine forest. Soon you pass the small Enzianalm (not serviced) and reach a fork. Turn left and follow the narrower path to Peder-Stieralm (2,252 m) – a peaceful alpine hut surrounded by open snowfields and panoramic mountain views.
After a rest, continue along trail no. 35 slightly downhill to Lyfialm (2,165 m), where a warm smile and traditional South Tyrolean dishes await you. The return follows the broad winter trail no. 8 (Marteller Höhenweg) back toward Enzianalm and your starting point.
