A Historic Viewpoint above the Martello Valley

The Mutspitze is more than just a summit, it’s a place shaped by history. Once used as an observation post during World War I, it now offers one of the most impressive panoramic views in the Martell Valley. The route leads through wide alpine basins, past the old glacier dam and into a high-altitude landscape filled with silence, space and strength. At the top, sweeping views of the Zufritt Lake and the Martell glaciers await. A mountain experience that leaves a lasting impression.

The Zufall Hut (2,264 m) is ideal for a cozy break with warm dishes or homemade strudel. Back in the valley, the Retro Gasthof Schönblick invites you to unwind with honest alpine cuisine, a warm atmosphere and a touch of nostalgia – the perfect place to let the day gently fade.
 

The hike starts at the end of the Martell Valley (2,050 m). From the parking area, follow the well-marked trail to the Zufall Hut. Shortly after the hut, turn left onto trail no. 150, passing through a narrow rocky section until reaching the flat valley floor of the Plima stream and the historic glacier dam. Tip: the ascent can be extended via the scenic Plima Gorge trail, approx. +30 minutes.
Continue almost level westwards on trail no. 150 until just before the bridge over the Butzenbach stream. At the junction, follow trail no. 41 into the Butzen Valley. After a while, turn right onto trail no. 41A, which leads toward the Mutspitze. Across grassy slopes, rocky terrain and stone cairns, you reach the summit area. The final 100 meters are steeper but technically easy. Just below the highest point, remnants of World War I stone walls appear. A short walk further reveals the new summit cross, slightly below the true summit, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise Zufritt Lake and the surrounding glaciers. Return via the same route.
