Tscharser Waalweg
Quiet Paths to Castle Juval
A picture-book trail: the Tscharser Waalweg, also known as the Schnals Waal, winds for eleven gentle kilometres along a historic irrigation channel. You follow the soft murmur of water through sun-drenched slopes, orchards and stone walls – always with wide views over the Vinschgau valley and its peaks.
Seasonal period: Spring to Autumn
Refreshment options & special features:
Take time for a snack at the Sonnenhof before heading to the castle. From its hilltop terrace you gaze across the valley, where history and mountain silence meet.
For the way back, you can either continue along the Waalweg to Staben or take the shuttle down to the valley and the Vinschgau train back to Goldrain.
Suitable for: for those who love to enjoy life and take it slow.
Directions:
From the village square in Tschars, just below the parish church, follow trail no. 1A towards the Schnals Waalweg. The path runs almost level, leading you through a landscape shaped by sunlight, water and quiet beauty. Wooden benches invite you to pause, breathe and take in the panorama.
After a leisurely walk you’ll reach the Sonnenhof inn, where the scent of South Tyrolean dishes greets you. A few steps higher lies Castle Juval – Reinhold Messner’s summer residence and one of his mountain museums.
