Close to the Sky

A true 3,000 m peak with glacier views – and a panorama that takes your breath away. The ascent to the Vordere Rotspitze leads through quiet larch forests, over sunny alpine meadows, and into rocky high-mountain terrain. The final section is steeper, your heartbeat in rhythm with your steps – and then, suddenly, you’re up there, in the realm of light. Below, the turquoise Zufrittsee glitters; above, the Cevedale glaciers shine. A moment that stays with you.

Summit that challenges and rewards. The final section over secured rock opens to a magnificent panorama – the Cevedale range, Zufallspitze, and Ortler in sight. A moment at the top, where heaven feels close enough to touch.

At the Marteller Hütte (2,610 m), sweet “Kaiserschmarrn” and mountain sunshine taste twice as good – a place where your gaze wanders and your thoughts come to rest.

From the parking area at the end of the Martell Valley, follow trail no. 37 across the Plima Gorge bridge and past the small lake near the former Hotel Paradies. The path climbs steadily through forest and meadows to the Schönbichl (2,636 m). From here, the terrain becomes more alpine – rocky, rugged, and raw. Over scree and stone bands you reach a narrow, secured gully; the final 100 m require surefootedness and focus before you stand beneath the summit cross.
Descend first through the gully, then follow trail no. 37A through a glacial landscape of small lakes and moraine ridges. Via the Ultnermarkt ridge you reach the Marteller Hütte (2,610 m) – a perfect spot for a rest with a panoramic view. Continue via trail no. 103 to the old glacial dam “Beim Bau” and along no. 150 to the Zufallhütte, before returning leisurely to the starting point.
